Soap Information

Everyone is enchanted by the landscape of New Mexico. Valleys of dancing sage and yuccas watched by spectacular mountains. At dusk speeding roadrunners surrender the land to mischievous coyotes who stand guard bathed in the moonlight. Blunt, tan mesas crowned nightly by royal blue and fire red sunsets. As equally spectacular are the exquisite soaps that are borne of this sanctuary. Bars cured in this magical arid land are naturally harder. Along with my famous silky formula this creates a sudsy, moisturizing soap that lasts forever.

Soap making is a beautiful art. I consider myself an artist since my soaps are colorful creations that come into this world in small, handmade batches. My warehouse is a aromatic sanctuary that makes my hours there a treat rather than a chore.  I, and only I, bring each bar into this world in a 32 pound block ( 20 blocks in a batch ).   I watch each block come to trace and pour it into the mold where its rests for 48 hours before I cut it down into the nicely sized 6 ounce bar.

I like simplicity in life so I am the only employee of Sandia Soap.  I make all the bars, cut them, label them, and prepare all the shipments.  I am also the secretary, bookkeeper, janitor, and head of the customer service department.   Mixing and selling 45,000 bars a year might not sound very simple for one person to do all by myself but I have found a very natural flow to the suds.  I don't work weekends and if I have work to do at night it is usually for 30 minutes on the computer typing up orders and UPS labels.   After all, nights and weekends are for being with my wife and doing family stuff.

Natural bars made with vegetable oils should not even be mentioned in the same sentence or paragraph with commercial soap bars.   But I must.    Commercial bars use sodium tallowate ( rendered animal fat mixed with lye ) as their base ingredient.  Then they fill the rest of the bar with cheap detergent and synthetic ingredients that strip your skin of its natural oil and dry it out so you have to buy moisturizing lotions to bring it back to life.   Try almost any natural bar for a couple weeks and I am sure you will never go back to the cheap stuff again.

The secret formula of my six ounce soap bar is saponified palm, palm kernel, olive and soybean oils.  After nine months of testing I found these oils in this combination create a long lasting bar with a loving lather and a beautiful silk texture.

I use essential and fragrance oils to scent my bars. Essential oils are "essential" for any handmade soap company. Fragrance oils add a wider spectrum to my line. Where would the world be without a good plum, watermelon, lilac, or papaya bar?  I love the 18 flavors that compose my musical suds, so dont worry about me getting rid of any of them, the rest are keepers until I retire in 25 years.  One needs to keep things simple.   But give me the privilege of adding a new flavor if I am so enticed to do so.

I feel your eyes should be able to enjoy the experience as much as the nose. The soap rainbow would not be complete without the blues, reds, greens, purples and yellows produced by cosmetic grade colorants.

In the spring of 2008 I decided to raise the weight of the bar to 6 ounces, why not have a little more soap.   I also turned my old colored bars into cocoons and butterflied the whole line into new flightful, curly colors.    When you go to the shopping cart you can click on the soap pics to see a larger image.  Enjoy.
